  15. This is the regularly posted FAQ for this newsgroup. If you wish to 
  16. contribute, you are most welcome to do so if you follow the following
  17. guidelines...

  23.     ABOI is alt.best.of.internet. Like all newsgroups, it was created
  24.     to address a specific need.

  26.     For your information: alt.best.of.internet is a group that has been 
  27.     created to contain articles that people have read in other newsgroups 
  28.     and which could be of interest to other people who don't read *every* 
  29.     group available.

  31.     Here's how to participate:

  33.     [a] find a newsgroup other than ABOI;
  34.     [b] find an article that is funny, entertaining, intelligent,
  35.         thought-provoking, or otherwise interesting;
  36.     [c] pretend you are going to 'follow-up' but instead of leaving
  37.         the "Newsgroups:" line as you find it, you delete all of the
  38.         groups and add "alt.best.of.internet" and instead of leaving the
  39.         "Follow-ups To:" line alone, forward it to the appropriate
  40.         groups.

  42.     You should not post new articles here, just post *copies* of
  43.     articles with their source, so people can follow-up to the
  44.     source. For that reason, it is polite to note clearly where you
  45.     found the article.

  48. [2] Do not use ABOI as your personal flame forum. Go to "alt.flame"
  49.  
  50.     ABOI only contains *copies* of posts. If you want to comment on the
  51.     post: follow-up to the original post, or mail the poster. If you
  52.     enjoy arguing and insulting others for fun, go to "alt.flame" If
  53.     you want to insult one flamer in particular, send them a
  54.     nasty e-mail by replying directly to their post, NOT by

  58. [3] Do not use ABOI or other inappropriate groups for adverts.

  60.     I cannot say this enough: alt.best.of.internet is for REPOSTING
  61.     articles of interest to other people on the net. ABOI, like most
  62.     Internet newsgroups, is not for advertising ANYTHING. Go to
  63.     groups with "biz", "for-sale", "marketplace", or "wanted".

  65.     Do not even think of posting the infamous chain-letter thread
  66.     called "MAKE.MONEY.FAST". It is a fraud and has gotten many
  67.     people in trouble. At least one person lost their net.access for
  68.     posting it.

  71. [4] Do not create a huge irrelevant thread on ABOI to annoy others.

  73.     Post a follow-up to the original group or mail the person who
  74.     posted the article. Irrelevant threads, called cascades, are
  75.     usually one-line posts that continue a rhyme or a theme. Most
  76.     people resent having to deal with cascades. Those who DO like
  77.     cascades read alt.cascade and alt.humor.

  80. [5] Do not post tests, personal mail, or personal messages to ABOI.

  82.     Test messages can be posted to "alt.test", "alt.test.test" or
  83.     "misc.test"

  85.     These test messages will result in e-mail responses directly to
  86.     you from all over the globe. If you would prefer NOT to get these
  87.     e-mail responses, post to the test groups with "ignore" in the
  88.     "Subject:" line.

  90.     Personal mail or messages for one person, not the entire readership 
  91.     of alt.best.of.internet, belong in your friend's personal mailbox
  92.     (or enemy's...see [2] above), *not* in ABOI.

  94.     If you are lonely and want to post a personal ad, do it in 
  95.     "alt.personals"
  96.     
  97.     Incidentally, it would behoove you to read a newsgroup before 
  98.     posting to it. If you read newsgroups prior to posting to them, you 
  99.     will most likely avoid making embarrassing (for you) or annoying 
  100.     (for everyone else) mistakes.

  103. [6] Remember everyone IS allowed to use the Internet.

  105.     The Internet consists of the people using it. It exists by the
  106.     grace of many volunteers and a few paid staff scattered around
  107.     the globe. No one type of access, server, computer, et cetera is
  108.     superior to any other.

  110.     If you wish to argue about the moral superiority of one type of
  111.     site (example: .edu, .mil, .gov) over other types of sites
  112.     (examples: aol.com, bbs.com, compuserve.com, delphi.com) then 
  113.     take it elsewhere.

  115.     Asking where to get access is a meritable question, but it should
  116.     be directed elsewhere. If you're new to the net, have a gander
  117.     in news.answers and news.newusers.questions.

  119.     Don't be a twit and annoy everyone with your rudeness.

  122. [7] Please remember to be courteous of others...use Netiquette.

  124.     The Internet and News are means of communicating.
  125.     "Do onto others as you would have them do to you."

  128. [8] Do not use your computer to abuse others, you *will* get caught.

  130.     In order to make error-checking possible, every post and e-mail
  131.     message contains an identifier. Even if you change your name and
  132.     your reply address, you can be traced. Remailers won't hide you.
  133.     Hacking your address won't hide you. Using a "deeptht" account
  134.     won't hide you. Using "chfn" won't hide you. So you might as well
  135.     be an adult and treat people nicely.

  138. [9] E-mail is the only fool-proof way to communicate with others.

  140.     Wanna talk to someone? Mail them. 
  141.     Wanna tell lots of people what you just read? Post it.
